What our experts think
The children loved how realistic and pretty the Beatrice doll was. They liked being able to identify her features, and compare this with their own lives; for example, noticing that their skin was a different colour to the doll’s, or that the doll’s hair was the same colour as their mum’s, so it might look like her when she was younger. Noticing the differences there may be between individuals can help with children’s social development and their understanding of people and communities.
Children tend to use role play to act out and make sense of real life situations, and they really enjoyed using the Beatrice doll as part of this, pretending to go on holiday or to the park. The doll also allows children to engage in imaginative thinking, helping to develop creativity, and promotes nurturing. Children liked changing the doll’s clothes and carrying out routines like getting her prepared for bedtime (including reading a book to her!), which can help children practice self-care routines. Taking the doll on the walk to school or involving her in other daily activities can also make these more enjoyable and interesting for children.
