How to Play

On the tray make a volcano using the modelling clay. The clay needs to be hollowed out most of the way down but a hole about the size of a 50p needs to be kept at the top. Press the modelling clay firmly onto the tray at the bottom to prevent any leakages. Next put a teaspoon of bicarbonate of soda inside the hollowed out volcano. Mix a teaspoon of red food colouring and 3 teaspoons vinegar together in a jug. Here comes the explosion – carefully pour the food colouring and vinegar solution into the volcano and see what happens.

The reason why the vinegar volcano erupts: Carbon dioxide gas is given off by the mixture of bicarbonate of soda and vinegar, causing an eruption.

For a quick experiment this could be done in a drinking glass
