Whether you are using everyday household objects as historical weapons, or using cardboard to make a Roman shield, learning about history helps children make sense of the world around them today. Dressing up as characters from history and re-enacting famous events is just one way to get children engaging with the past. History also supports development in other subject areas – labelling drawings with different parts of a Roman Centurion’s uniform is a great way to put newly learnt English skills into practice; capital letters, full stops and commas are all appropriate for use in descriptions of their battle wear! Here are some great play ideas that can help children engage with history.
