What is it
TinyHands Raccoons Treehouse is an educational app which aims to help develop basic mathematical concepts such as size, colours, numbers and patterns. It uses everyday objects from the child’s world such as clothes and food.
Children can choose to enter various rooms within the treehouse; once they are inside there is an activity to carry out – these are varied for each of the 12 rooms; children can, for example, choose the correct outfit for the raccoon by matching her chosen shape, construct toys in the playroom or play the memory game in the allotment.

What our experts think
We liked the variety of activities and the way they built upon basic mathematical concepts. There are a range of enjoyable mathematical activities for the children to complete. The app is clearly aimed at preschool children and takes into account the early skills which they need to develop.
We also like the way in which the app gives children free choice to explore the rooms and make choices for themselves.
The app cleverly uses everyday objects which young children will be familiar with – this is a strategy used by early years educators who endeavour to make learning relevant to the children. The characters used are also appealing to young children.
It would be even better if...
We felt it would be better if the app had some animation on each page – for example if the children could click on objects around the screen and see something happen.
