What is it

The Numbers for Osmo app requires the Osmo device and the Osmo Number tiles to function.

Set in an underwater world, children must use their maths skills to burst the bubbles, save the fish, and collect keys to unlock the neck level. Discover and collect over 90 beautiful fish of all kinds, from Rainbowfish to Frankenfish!

Kids arrange physical tiles, including dots and digits, to make numbers and complete levels. Add by putting more tiles, subtract by removing tiles and multiply by connecting tiles together. There are no wrong answers and no time limits, so children aren’t pressured as they learn.

With a counting, addition, concatenation and multiplication mode, there is a challenge for everybody.

What our experts think

This was a popular game with our little testers, and it was wonderful to see them so enthusiastic and engaged with their learning. They loved earning power ups – the lightening was particularly popular – which encouraged them to make larger numbers.

Having dotted tiles means that children can learn and experiment with the concept of maths a lot easier, as this provides a more visual guide than digits. The digit tiles allow children to build on these skills.

When the tiles are in front of the screen, the total number shows up, so children can try the numbers they think might work and find out if they are correct. This doesn’t register as a wrong answer, so children learn rather than losing confidence. As they work through the levels there are more difficult challenges, meaning that their skills can progress.

It would be even better if...

 

It is not clear that the ‘settings’ icon in the top left allows you to ‘unlock all modes’, so that children can start with the more difficult levels straight away, which is a really key feature to miss.

The same icon shows the achievements children have unlocked as well.

There is also no home button on the level screen, so you have to either complete the level or restart the app.
