What is it

Mario’s Alphabet is an educational app that introduces letters, corresponding phonetic sounds, and words that start with that letter.  Within each sound there are numerous levels (there are 168 in total); as children progress they build up their knowledge and understanding of the alphabet in a fun and engaging way.
Children roll, jump, fly, or sail around Mario´s Alphabet, in a world filled with early reading.  There is lots to see and do; they can tap and slide the letters, discover funny animations and sounds and there are 25 funny characters to help reinforce learning.  As the children move around they not only see the letters but they also hear the sound and are exposed to words.

The gameplay is simple and the instructions are in the form of a finger demonstrating what to do.

The app has been translated to 6 different languages (English, Spanish, French, Italian, German, Portuguese)

Tested on an iPad

What our team of testers said

"It's another monster, he is smiling." - Girl, aged 3

"Yes, it's the Ninja this time!" - Boy, aged 4

"Look at all the letters I collected!" - Girl, aged 4

  • Is a precursor to reading and writing
  • Shows children how letters and sounds are linked to words

What our experts think

A fun app which engaged our little testers.  The children particularly liked all of the  different characters that they could collect; this was a great motivational tool and the children were definitely learning without realising it!  The animations were very appealing and the children loved the funny faces that the monsters made!

Our testers managed to explore and navigate this app quite well by themselves.  On some levels there were multiple obstacles that some children needed a bit of help with. However, it was good that when you got stuck and had to go back you only went back a little bit so it wasn’t too frustrating.

Through playing the app children were exposed to the links between the written letter, their sounds and associated words.  There was lots for the children to see and do and the app was one which they were reluctant to stop playing.

It would be even better if...

We would have liked to have seen a parent gate on the settings to change the language.

Some of our parents said the app would have benefitted from a function to set up different profiles for multiple children.  Also, the levelling was a little complicated and could be simplified.

Once children have seen the letter and heard the sounds it would be beneficial for them to practise the actual letter formation; it would have been good to see a level where the children were encouraged to trace and free draw the letters they had been learning.
