What is it

How to make electricity, from Crayon Box, is an app that allows children to experiment with, and learn about, electricity.
‘How to Make Electricity’ is a virtual lab where children can experiment with power sources and ‘plug-and-play items’ like light bulbs or potatoes.  Children build their circuit deciding what they will put in to it; the aim is to make a complete circuit and make something happen (light the bulb, turn the fan, heat the potato.)

By switching to the ‘science view’, children can discover electrons and observe the processes at the molecular level.

There are 3 sections to explore:  electrochemical (water, coke, salt, copper key, aluminum fork, and iron nail);  electromechanical (magnet, gears, tap, steam source, pinwheel, and coils); solar (solar panel, sun, clouds, wind, thermometer and birds.)

There is lots to do within this app and it compliments what children learn in Key Stage 2 science.

Tested on an iPad

What our team of testers said

"It's louder because I've moved the sun closer so there is more power." - Girl 8

" A key, fork, coke and salt conduct the electricity." - Girl 8

Skills Developed

  • Teaches children about circuits
  • Allows children to explore conductors and insulators
  • Encourages children to explore sources of electricity
  • Allows for trial and error learning

What our experts think

How to make electricity allows children to build circuits and explore conductors and insulators in a safe and fun way.  Our testers enjoyed placing items into their circuits and observing the effect.  The app clearly showed that some items conducted the electricity better and made, for example, the light bulb brighter.

There was lots of scope for discussion with an adult to further children’s knowledge and understanding.  It complimented what is taught in schools at Key Stage 2.

We liked the different labs and how they taught children about the different ways of making electricity.

It would be even better if...

We would have liked some questions and information to further children’s understanding of the scientific concepts they are exploring.
