What is it
“Henri Le Worm” app includes a fun, interactive story exploring a magical world of food, nature and cooking and also provides a number of recipes to cook ‘offline’. Narration and character voices are by the celebrated British actor Simon Pegg and the nutritious family-friendly recipes are by Raymond Blanc.
The initial garden screen is full of interactive features teaching facts about plants from Sebastien the intelligent slug, the importance of sunshine and watering as well as introducing various bugs, and providing the ability to water the plants yourself and draw a rainbow. There are many more interactive features throughout the story while the heroes attempt to recover the stolen cookery book from Lumpy the maggot and take part in the Best Chef competition, including ‘tunnelling like worm’, helping Henri cook in his kitchen and flip pancakes, serving and eating breakfast, travelling to Lumpy’s lair and fighting Lumpy! Designed for the iPad, iPad mini and iPhone, the app encourages interactive play and learning through an engaging story, touchscreen interactions, fun food and animal facts, recipes and sing along music.

What our experts think
This app really helps children to learn about food, nature and cookery in a fun and interactive way. It’s a lovely story with wonderful narration and voiceovers, and great graphics. They particularly enjoyed: watering the seeds, cleaning up the flour, making the pancakes, feeding everyone breakfast, popping the balloons and interacting with the bugs! The younger children enjoyed the interactive elements in the early stages whilst the older children (5+) enjoyed the whole story.
It would be even better if...
The interactive elements were more clearly highlighted, particularly in the first garden screen (it would be sad for children to miss these great features).
Explore the garden with your child and talk more about the vegetables and the process of growing plants. Link this with their wider experiences – such as what they’ve recently eaten.
Use the recipes in the app to cook with your child.
