What is it

Hairy Words 2 is a game to help children practice the second 100 high frequency Sight words. Sight words are words that appear frequently in most of the text kids read, but can’t easily be sounded out. Learning them helps children become more confident at reading and spelling.

To save a Hairy, children choose a word to spell, then type it out. Tricky words give a special pink Hairy. They then tap to bounce the Hairy on the yeti’s tummy to reach safety. The game counts the words children have spelled correctly to keep track of their progress.

What our team of testers said

"I'm going to save all the Hairies!" - Boy aged 6

"I can do the spelling by myself." - Girl aged 6

What our experts think

A fun app with lovely animations. This app helps children to recognise and spell the high frequency sight words – this is a vital part of learning to read as some words cannot be read using a phonics based approach.
We like the way in which the children had to spell the words before they could play the game with the Hairy characters. Using a lower case keyboard is a very good idea as it will lead to less confusion for the children (children can become confused when using upper case at an early age.)

The children who tried this app really seemed to enjoy it. Saving the Hairies was a great motivation to keep spelling words which children can otherwise tire of quite quickly.

The games also require children to be really accurate with timing their taps to get the Hairies to successfully jump the gaps and save them. Whilst not the main aim of the app this is a great skill to practice.

It would be even better if...

Whilst there are no external links, in-app purchases, adverts or other nasties, it is possible for children to reset game progress without an adult. It would be great if this was behind a parent gate to prevent unintended resets.
