What is it

Hairy words 1 is a fun app that helps children to learn the first 100 high frequency sight words.  Knowing these words is essential – they make up half of all written material.

Sight words are words that appear frequently in most of the text kids read, but can’t easily be sounded out. Learning them helps children become more confident at reading and spelling.

The app contains fun animations and is easy for children to navigate.  It also develops keyboard skills (and uses lower case letters.)

Each time a children spells a word they collect a Hairy… and if a word is  a tricky word they will collect a pink Hairy!  When you have enough Hairies you can play the game – you can make Hairy hum, bounce on yetis to escape form danger and climb the mountains.

Our tip: at level 2 you need to tap the Hairies twice (once walking, once in the air) to make them jump the gap!

The app contains 12 levels.

Tested on an iPad

What our team of testers said

"I've got a pink one!" - Boy age 5

"I only need one more Hairy to play the game." - Boy age 5

"My son didn't show any interest in learning to read before he found this game, now he's learned 21 words!" - Parent of boy aged 4

What our experts think

A fun app with lovely animations. This app helps children to recognise and spell the high frequency sight words – this is a vital part of learning to read as some words cannot be read using a phonics based approach.
We like the way in which the children had to spell the words before they could play the game with the Hairy characters. Using a lower case keyboard is a very good idea as it will lead to less confusion for the children (children can become confused when using upper case at an early age.)

The children who tried this app really seemed to enjoy it. Saving the Hairies was a great motivation to keep spelling words which children can otherwise tire of quite quickly.

The games also require children to be really accurate with timing their taps to get the Hairies to successfully jump the gaps and save them. Whilst not the main aim of the app this is a great skill to practice.

It would be even better if...

How to get the Hairies to jump the gap in level 2 should be MUCH clearer. We had several frustrated adults as well as children who tried hard to figure this out and gave up.

Top Tip: if you’re stuck on level 2 – tap the Hairy twice to make him jump the gap.
