What is it

Easy origami for kids introduces children (and adults) to Origami: the Japanese art of paper folding.

Follow the step-by-step instructions which are presented as a series of photos. Some of the more tricky projects have video clips which can be used instead of/ as well as the photo instructions.

This app also features printable instruction sheets for each project and origami patterns to get you started.  You email the template to yourself (this needs parental consent.)

The app contains 40 kinds of origami crafts (mostly animals); these are separated into themes (sea, land and sky).

What our experts think

Easy Origami is a great app for children (and adults) who wish to learn the art of origami.  It is colourful and engaging and it is lovely to see an app which makes the transition from screen to real life.

There are a wide range of animals to choose from with differing levels of complexity.  In order to complete the projects children need to show perseverance (some are very tricky) and need to really concentrate to follow the instructions.  The app develops children’s fine motor skills and spatial awareness as they need to ensure that their folds are accurate (and in exactly the correct place) if they are to be successful.

The photographic instructions are clearly presented and easy to follow; the video clips are a good addition for some of the more tricky projects.  The fact that you can email the paper template to yourself and print it out is also useful; it is very difficult to complete the designs (especially the more complex ones) without this.

It would be even better if...

The app could have been improved by the addition of a key showing the difficulty level for each of the designs; this would have meant that the younger users could have gone straight to a design suitable for them.

It wasn’t clear that the mail icon was for emailing the templates; a home screen with basic user instructions would have really helped.  It could have explained the icons and how you could email the templates to yourself (some of our users missed this feature.)
