What our experts think
Charlie and Lola: I’ve Won! is an exceptional app in our view as it encourages children to get physically active (hopping or copying Charlie’s dancing) and challenges their social skills (through the pass-and-play multiplayer element) – both rare qualities in a children’s app.
Not only that but within the 13 different types of mini-games most of the Early Years Foundation areas are included in some form. For example, mathematics skills are encouraged through rolling the die and seeing the digits appear on screen as they move as well as the number ordering, pairs matching and maze mini-games. It also touched on Understanding the World through mini-games asking children recognise what specific animals eat and recognise food, as well as literacy/language skills via tracing letters, completing CVC words (like dog) and encouraging verbal confidence through making animal noises.
The app was especially popular with fans of the show, who loved playing with the familiar characters. Our little testers particularly enjoyed the hopping, dancing like Charlie and making an animal noise games and it was a delight for us to see them getting involved! The mix of mini-games makes the app more fun and helps keep their attention longer.
It would be even better if...
Some of our younger testers needed a little bit of help to know what to do the first time they played but were soon able to play on their own or with parents/siblings.
Whilst there are actually 13 different mini-game types (with multiple variations within each) some felt that the gameplay became a little repetitive, probably because of how their dice fell (i.e. you may not get to play all 13 games if you don’t land on the necessary squares). It may be preferred by some if they could select specific mini-games directly.
