Math Recipe: Victoria Sandwich Cake – Learning Maths through Cooking
Did you know that cooking is an excellent way for children to practise math skills?
This scrummy Victoria Sandwich Cake cake recipe includes instructions and tips to mix some maths in with your baking.
The secret to this recipe is all about measures: the flour, sugar and butter should weigh exactly the same as the eggs.
It is best to use a non-digital set of scales; this provides an opportunity to discuss how to read the scales, focusing on the different intervals and what they represent.
Shopping for ingredients
It’s a great idea to get your child to help with the shopping for this recipe. As a guide, you will need around 250g of sugar, flour and butter when using medium-sized eggs. But give your child a chance to think about the problem first, and see how they work it out! Getting too much or too little will be an added lesson for them.
Bonus points if they work out how much it will cost, and pay at the till! They can learn to compare the prices of different brands (you can give older children a budget to work to), work out the correct money and check they’ve been given the correct change.
