There are many ways to enjoy the countryside with your family, and there are activities to suit all ages from babies and toddlers, right through to getting grandparents involved! Embrace the outdoors with a:

  • Nature Walk – pack a picnic and set off into nature, enjoy the fresh air, exercise and beauty around you. Older children could set a trail for a younger sibling to follow, or make a list of things to spot or collect and see who can find them all first.
  • Coastal Visit – take a stroll along the coast or promenade, visit the beach and build a sandcastle and have that all important ice-cream too. The coastline hosts a rich diversity of wildlife your kids can explore!
  • Farms and Nature Reserves – many farms and reserves host family activities so take a look what’s on in your area. You can visit and help feed the animals, pick your own fruit or vegetables and select some locally produced food whilst you are there to sample back at home. You could even grow your own! This is a great way to introduce children to where food comes from and help them learn about healthy eating.

Visiting the National Parks

For a family day out why not visit a National Park? With events all summer for families, there is sure to be something perfect for you and your child to enjoy:

  • Guided Walks, Hikes and CycliHope Valleyng – if you are feeling energetic then get active and take a walk, hike or a ride and see some amazing landscapes along the way.
  • Photography – got an aspiring photographer in the family? Set them a challenge to take some beautiful images of the natural beauty around them. Once home these photographs could be turned into a piece of artwork for the wall.
  • Farmers Markets and Star Gazing – just a couple of examples of the events National Parks will be putting on for visitors. There’s many more to be found, some with free ice-cream too! Whether your family is active or crafty there’s something for everyone.

Outdoor Family Fun

Even if you can’t get to a National Park, you can still celebrate the great outdoors locally, or even in your own garden:

However you celebrate the countryside and our National Parks this summer, remember to stay hydrated and keep safe in the sun. Don’t let the drizzle stop you either – remember to pack raincoats and wellies so your fun doesn’t have to stop if the weather isn’t co-operating!

Whether you have the adventure of the countryside on your doorstep, or need to travel a little to enjoy it, it’s great to spend time as a family appreciating the wonders of nature.
